When it comes to proximity payments, convenience and simplicity are fairly synonymous on many levels. Whether looking at the manner in which a payment is performed (it must be easy to do) or how the payment works (it must be easy to understand) the convenient solution is also a simple one.
Accordingly, the most convenient solution will be one that spares consumers the need to present their card or operate their phone by allowing them to simply approve transactions by putting a finger on a reader.
Payment form factor is a key part of the user experience. We will come back on this in a few days.

Mobile wallets are about to become the next battleground for the payment industry. However, it will only become a truly viable proximity payment option if these new solutions address the need for a convenient and simple customer experience without compromising security and privacy.
While working on mobile wallets and smartphones as a proximity payment option, Natural Security has developed a white paper about security issues surrounding this new experience, based on a research note from Gartner.

Despite the hype, mobile wallets won’t roll out until they can:
Natural Security paves the road for proximity payments based on mobile wallets by solving issues such as customer equipment, efficiency and convenience, security and privacy. During a workshop at Wallet Wars, Natural Security will disclose:
Natural Security will present results from the world’s first trial of a new payment method incorporating payment cards, biometrics and midrange contactless technology. Two biometric technologies were tested during a six-month pilot: digital fingerprints in Angoulême (Near Bordeaux) and finger vein patterns in Villeneuve d'Ascq (near Lille). Customers of partner banks were invited to visit their bank branch to register their biometric data in their credit card so they could take advantage of the opportunity to pay for purchases using this unique method in participating stores. All transactions were authenticated using biometrics and contactless technology, so customers did not have to manipulate their cards or enter a PIN.

"The number of transaction frauds and security breaches in traditional security systems such as passwords are rapidly increasing, and the necessity for a strong authentication method become inevitable.
Due to the role of customers in progress of banks, and thus in the economic development of countries, banks should provide convenient and more secured banking services to customers. Banks could not meet this aim via using traditional authentication methods such as identification cards and passwords/PIN, because there are many attacks that could be launched against this authentication system. Biometric technology seems to be a perfect solution to defeat these threats.
In this paper we review current biometric applications in banking industry in the world, and then the results of this research are presented. Authentication methods using in Iran’s banking system and a suggestion for using a biometric model in this system that could help banks operate more securely is presentedReview Banking on Biometric in the World’s Banks and Introducing a Biometric Model for Iran’s Banking System."

Wired, December 2012, by Mat Honan...
“the weakest link of all : human memory.”
“Passwords need to he hard in order not to be routinely cracked or guessed. So if your password is any good at all, there’s a very good chance you’ll forget it – especially if you follow the prevailing wisdom and don’t write it down. Because of that, every password-based system needs a mechanism to reset your account. And the inevitable trade-offs (security versus privacy versus convenience) means that recovering a forgotten password can’t be onerous. That’s precisely what opens your account to being easily overtaken via social engineering…”
… “We can’t possibly have a password-based security system that’s memorable enough to allow mobile logins, convenient enough to be easily reset, and yet also secure against brute –force hacking.”

»in Les Echos.

"Shoppers at the V2 mall in Villeneuve d’Ascq, France, will be able to make purchases simply by taping their finger on a biometric POS terminal. Customers will be equipped with a card with a special cover that communicates with the terminal wirelessly, to confirm that the customer’s fingerprints are the same registered under that card and bank account. While the card is necessary, it can remain in the shopper’s pocket and is simply there to confirm their identity. This ensures that none of the customer’s date is stocked anywhere but in their card." from PYMNTS International.
